Structured data and schema markup: how Google understands your site

Google does not have to guess what is on your page when you tell it explicitly. Structured data is your site translated into machine language, and it pays off with more visible results.

You have seen results in Google with stars, a price, availability, or expanding questions: they take more space, catch the eye, and collect more clicks. Behind almost every such result stands schema markup: an invisible data layer that tells machines exactly what they are looking at. With the rise of AI search this layer matters even more: it is read not only by search engines but also by the assistants that recommend businesses. Here is what it is, which types bring real value, and how to add it without unnecessary theory.

The more organized the data under the surface, the more prominently the search engine can show the result.

What structured data is

Your service page is clear to a human: a title, a description, a price, a phone number. A machine, though, sees text and guesses what is what. Structured data removes the guessing: a small block of code in the page, invisible to the visitor, stating explicitly “this is a company at this address”, “this is an article published on this date”, “this is a question and this is its answer”.

The vocabulary for these descriptions is schema.org: a shared standard created by the major search engines. The most convenient way to add it is JSON-LD: a standalone block of code that does not touch the design and is the easiest to maintain. It is also what Google recommends in its structured data documentation.

What you gain: the rich results

The markup is the admission ticket to the more visible formats in Google’s results:

Worth knowing: the markup makes the rich result possible, not guaranteed. Google decides when to show the enriched format. But without markup you are not even in the game, while your competitors are.

The new reason: machines are no longer just search engines

Until recently structured data was mainly a concern for SEO specialists. Then search changed: AI Overviews answers directly in Google, and ChatGPT and Perplexity recommend companies and products. All of these systems share one problem: they have to understand content quickly and without error. A page that explains itself in machine language hands the AI concrete data to cite and recommend; a page that leaves it guessing more often stays out of the answer.

That is why markup today is part of the bigger contest for presence in AI answers: how that contest is won is covered in our articles on AI Overviews and GEO optimization.

Which markup types to add first

There is no point chasing the hundreds of schema.org types at once. For a business website the winning sequence is short:

Type Where What it gives
Organization / LocalBusinessThe homepageName, address, phone, opening hours: the foundation of local presence
ServiceThe service pagesWhat service, from whom, in which area
ProductThe product pagesPrice, availability, reviews: the rich product results
FAQPagePages with questions and answersExpanding questions under the result
ArticleThe blogAuthor, date, cover: a clearer identity for the content
BreadcrumbListThe whole siteA path instead of a bare URL in the result

One iron rule: the markup describes only what is genuinely on the page. Invented ratings, nonexistent reviews, and unreal prices are a direct path to a manual penalty from Google, and climbing out of that is far harder than living without the stars.

How it gets added and checked

In WordPress the basics come almost for free: the SEO plugins generate Organization, Article, and breadcrumbs automatically, and for FAQs and services there are ready blocks and JSON-LD generators. On a custom site the markup is built into the templates, so every new page and product receives it automatically: a one-time developer task that then works for the whole site.

Validation is the mandatory last step. The Rich Results Test shows what Google reads from a given page and where the errors are, while Search Console watches the whole site’s markup continuously and signals problems. Markup with errors is like a broken signpost: worse than none, because it confuses instead of guiding. In our projects structured data is part of the standard of our SEO, AIO and GEO optimization service, not an optional extra.

Content persuades people, markup persuades machines. In a search where machines decide who gets shown, the second is no longer optional.

Frequently asked questions

What is structured data in simple terms?

A short machine-readable description of the content, embedded invisibly in the page: "this is an article from this date", "this is a company with this address and phone", "this is a product at this price". People never see it, but Google and AI systems read it and rely on it.

Does schema markup guarantee rich results in Google?

No. The markup makes the page eligible for rich results, and Google decides when to show them. Without it, though, there is almost no chance. The practice is clear: correct markup noticeably raises the odds and never hurts, as long as it describes the truth.

Which schema types are most useful for a small business?

LocalBusiness with address, phone, and opening hours; Organization for the company; FAQPage for pages with questions; Article for the blog; Product with price and availability for stores; Service for the service pages. Five or six types cover the vast majority of the value.

Can I add structured data without a developer?

In WordPress most SEO plugins like Yoast and Rank Math generate the basic markup automatically, and for individual pages there are generators you copy ready code from. For a custom site or a store with many products it is wiser to build the markup into the templates, which is a developer's task.

How do I check that my markup works?

With Google's Rich Results Test: you enter the address and see what was read and whether there are errors. After the rollout, Search Console shows a dedicated report with all detected types and any problems with them.
